Laundry – How to Add Essential Oils
You might have seen a warning in many laundry fragrance booster article about essential oils causing fires inside dryers. From recent research, this appears to be quite a rare issue but it’s still a danger. It also may be possible that carrier oils are a bigger problem. There have been a lot of news stories lately about some folks starting fires by using carrier oils such as coconut oil and Castor oil.
These are not the essential oils that you might be thinking about. Carrier oils, which are commonly used in shampoos and hair care products, have caused problems before in the laundry rooms of homes. They can ignite fires and cause burns that are sometimes severe. The problem was always the reaction time when these products came into contact with human clothing. A person could spray a bottle of shampoo on a fire and it would catch instantly, but if they were in a hurry to put their clothes in the dryer, they probably wouldn’t notice the flames.
So, how can you avoid having problems with these types of dangerous chemicals? Use essential oils in line drying rather than regular washing clothes. If you must use detergent, use natural, non-chemical detergent. Natural detergent is better because it doesn’t leave any residue behind after you wash it. If you must use regular laundry detergent, mix one cup of bleach with four cups of water for each load of laundry that you do and then only do the laundry when absolutely necessary.
After your clothes come out of the dryer, wait for them to air dry. This helps prevent the essential oils from becoming airborne. It also helps to kill the bacteria that might be living on the surface of your clothes. Then, hang them up to dry on a line to air out. Be sure to allow them to air dry completely before folding them or putting them away.
When you are washing your clothes, use essential oils in line drying rather than washing them in the washing machine. Use cold water instead of hot water and a fabric softener rather than regular fabric softener. Regular fabric softener contains formaldehyde. As a result, a fabric softener may actually cause damage to your clothes.
The same goes for you sheets. Instead of washing them in the washing machine, hang them up to dry in the air. You can also add essential oils to your sheets before folding them to keep them fresh throughout the day. There are a variety of ways to add essential oils to keep your clothes fresh throughout the day. If you want to keep them clean all day long, try using an essential oil’s laundry detergent. These detergents don’t leave any pore-clogging contaminants in the clothes, which helps them to remain fresh all day long.
