There are many different personal care products on the market today that contain essential oils, and as a cat owner, you have probably heard of some of them. But do you actually know what those oils are and whether or not they are safe for cats? It’s actually pretty simple to answer the question, yes they are safe for cats. Let me explain.
Aromatherapy is based around using essential oils in order to improve your health. Aromatherapy is one of the oldest healing arts around. People have been using essential oils to treat a variety of ailments for thousands of years. So, there is a pretty good history behind it. Now, however, there are a growing number of people who are using these types of products on cats. This is because of the fears that some of the ingredients in these products may be toxic to them.
One type of product that is commonly used is flea sprays. Most cats, if not all, will enjoy bathing in a nice smelling oil of repellent. The only issue that owners have is that these essential oils can be extremely toxic when they get into their lungs. So, the only way to use these products without worrying about them causing damage is to use them diluted.
Essential oils can also be used as flea repellents in another way. You can take essential oils and mix them with lavender oil. Just be sure that you don’t use just the lavender oil, but also the rest of the ingredients. You can then spray this mixture on any area of your cat’s body, where they seem to hide, like under the couch or in their bed.
One of the most popular types of products that are being sold for this purpose are soaps. Soaps that have a dilution level of one part to twelve parts of water. Be aware that essential oils and soaps should never be used by themselves without the supervision of a veterinarian. Essential oils can cause strange interactions with medications. If you suspect that your medication is altering the delicate chemistry of the medication, you may want to dilute the essential oil with some water first.
So, if essential oils are not safe for cats, what should you use? The best option is to use products that contain no essential oils at all. These types of products are normally called “pet friendly” products. They are formulated with all natural ingredients and no chemicals in them. So, even if your vet gave you the go-ahead to use them, make sure that you use them sparingly.
