Essential Oils and Zanzibar

The natural scents of a variety of plants can soothe the soul, reduce stress and anxiety, promote sleep, lift the spirits and even help fight fungus. Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that retain the natural smell and taste, or “essence,” of their source. “They are powerful botanical medicines that can be used in a number of ways,” says Dr. Lin. They can be inhaled, applied topically to the skin, or taken orally as dietary supplements.

Because of their potency, pure essential oils should not be used directly on the skin, but rather diluted with another oil before application. This can be done by using a diffuser (inhaling the aroma from tiny drops of the liquid in a water-based mist) or by adding diluted oil to bathwater or lotion. They are also used in aromatherapy, a type of complementary medicine that uses the power of the senses to improve health.

Aromatherapy is often used in conjunction with other health practices, such as massage, reflexology and acupuncture. A variety of essential oils are available in most health food stores. They are usually inexpensive, easy to find and can be purchased in bulk. The most common uses for essential oils are for relaxation, pain relief, mental alertness and sleep.

There is some scientific evidence that some essential oils have antimicrobial properties. Some have been shown to be effective against Candida spp., Staphylococcus aureus and other pathogens. Others have been found to inhibit the growth of fungi such as Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium cladosporum, Fusarium venenatum and Malassezia furfur.

The antifungal action of essential oils is attributed to their ability to penetrate and disrupt the cell walls of fungi. This causes damage to the lipids and protein within the cells, as well as the mitochondrial membranes. It is believed that essential oils can prevent the growth of fungus by blocking the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is a major energy source for cellular metabolism and is required for fungus to grow.

Many essential oils have relaxing, calming and stress-reducing effects, including bergamot, lavender and chamomile. Others can increase focus and concentration, boost libido and even help treat achy joints and muscles. Eucalyptus and tea tree have natural decongestant effects, while lemon can enhance immune function and promote healthy digestion.
