Heteropyxis dehniae
A plant that is well known in Zimbabwe and the region, Heteropyxis dehniae (also called inkiza yentaba) is native to bushveld. Its leaves and roots are often used medicinally by the Zulu.

It is also used for cosmetic purposes and is a popular ingredient in soaps, perfumes and other products. It has long been used by the Zulu and a variety of other groups to improve their overall health.

There are a range of different uses for this plant including medicinal tea, as a blood purifier, and to relieve headaches by burning the leaves. It is a good source of vitamin C, and has been found to be beneficial for skin.

Cymbopogon nardus

A native of Benin, Cymbopogon nardus is a member of the Poaceae family and is an important food plant in West African cultures. It is widely used as a culinary herb and also as a medicinal plant for fever, intestinal parasites, digestive and menstrual problems.

The essential oil from this plant is a yellow liquid and has been reported to have some pharmacological properties. It is believed to be a potent antifungal and repellent against mosquitos.

GC-MS analysis of the essential oils from Helichrysum splendidum harvested in summer showed that a majority of them contain aldehydes, and some sesquiterpenes like linalool, trans-b-caryophyllene and geraniol. In some samples, hydrocarbons such as myrcene and limonene also make up a significant amount of the oil.

Some of the essential oils from Helichrysum species harvested in summer showed antifungal activity against Alternaria alternata and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Among them, germacrene D and spathulenol were found to be the most effective compounds.
